Kiyana Dubard

Strategic communicator and systems thinker designing research-driven approaches to complex problems.

I analyze how people interact with systems and translate those insights into product strategy, user research, and clear communication.

About Me

I’m a strategic communicator and systems thinker who’s always been interested in how people understand things—especially when those things are complex, unclear, or just not designed with them in mind.

I’m currently an L5 Area Manager at Amazon while finishing my Master’s in Professional Communication at the University of San Francisco. I graduated from Towson University with my Bachelor's of Science in Mass Communications with a specialization in Public Relations. A DMV native with a wanderlust spirit, I moved across the country in Fall 2023 to the Bay Area and have since made it my home.

My experience in operations has pushed me to think constantly about systems—how they’re built, where they break, and how people navigate them in real time. My graduate work gave me the space to step back and analyze those same challenges through research, strategy, and communication.

A lot of my work lives at the intersection of product strategy, user research, and technical communication. Whether I’m analyzing instructional systems, building communication plans, or breaking down how messaging impacts behavior, I tend to approach problems by asking: does this actually make sense for the person on the receiving end?

I didn’t come into this space through traditional design or tech internships, so my perspective is a little different. It’s shaped by real-world operations, academic research, and figuring things out under pressure—which, honestly, has taught me just as much about users as anything else.

Outside of work and school, I’m someone who naturally connects ideas across disciplines (sometimes in ways people don’t expect—like linking technical communication to biblical texts). At the core of it, I just enjoy understanding how things work, why they don’t, and how they can be better.

Evaluating Instructional Systems Through Technical Communication Frameworks: A Case Study of Exodus 25–27

Technical communication is often framed as a modern discipline tied to digital products, user experience (UX), and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence. However, the core function of technical communication—providing clear, actionable instructions to enable task completion—predates modern technology.

This case study explores whether ancient instructional systems can be evaluated using contemporary technical communication frameworks. Specifically, it examines chapters 25–27 of the Book of Exodus as a large-scale instructional system to determine:

How effectively complex instructions are structured, communicated, and executed when evaluated against modern technical communication principles.

This project demonstrates the value of applying structured frameworks to analyze complex systems, even outside traditional modern contexts.

Through this analysis, I developed skills in:

  • Framework-based evaluation

  • Instructional system analysis

  • Identifying gaps between design and user experience

  • Translating abstract insights into practical applications
